Mayo Clinic: Oral Irrigators Should Not Replace Brushing, Flossing.

Picture
The Mayo Clinic (2/18, Carr) “Healthy Lifestyle” blog considers whether flossing or an oral irrigator is more effective for cleaning “the tight spaces between the teeth.” Although oral irrigators can be effective in removing food particles from teeth, Mayo Clinic advises oral irrigators not replace brushing and flossing, still the most effective oral hygiene tools. Mayo Clinic advises, “If plain dental floss gets stuck in your teeth, use the waxed variety. If you have a hard time handling dental floss, try a floss holder.”

Fun Facts about Flossing:

1. Flossing Less than half of Americans floss daily; with men flossing less than women.
2. Brushing your teeth without flossing is like only washing 70% of your body.
3. Dental floss was first manufactured in 1882 and was made of silk.
4. In 1994 a prison inmate in West Virginia braided floss into a rope, scaled a wall and escaped.

A brand New Smile should be approached as Teamwork!

Picture
Here is a great example of a 71 year old female patient who always desired a " nicer" smile. After discussing her options, we referred her for Invisalign treatment with an Orthodontist. She did not think that straightening teeth was an option at her age! We explained that in the hands of our specialist colleagues, Invisalign is both comfortable and predictable.
Once alignment was completed, we took care of her bleaching and Voila ! She says " I have been wanting to do something about my smile for more than 30 years ! " and I tear up!

Don't wait that long!  I would be happy to discuss options at your next appointment !
See you soon !

Study: Seniors Who Sleep In Dentures At Higher Risk For Pneumonia.

Picture
“Today, approximately 75 percent of senior citizens over age 65 have kept some or all of their teeth – a record -thanks to better preventive measures like community water fluoridation and daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste, according to the American Dental Association,” a press release carried by the Senior Journal (12/19) announces. The release goes on to state that dental health can have a significant effect on overall health, and, as an example, points to a recent study in the Journal of Dental Research that “found that very elderly adults (ages 85 and older) in community-living settings who slept in dentures were at a higher risk of developing pneumonia because bacteria from the mouth could be inhaled into the lungs.”
Meanwhile, on its website, KAMR-TV (12/19) reports the results of the Journal of Dental Research study, quoting Dr. Judith Jones, DDS, of the American Dental Association. Dr. Jones said, “it’s really important if you have dentures of any type to make sure that you take them out every night,” adding that people should “take them out, clean them carefully, store them in a cup of liquid, and in the morning clean them again.”

Good Housekeeping reports...

Good Housekeeping reports that people should wait until later in the morning, around 9 a.m. when they arrive at work, to brush their teeth.  “The American Dental Association recommends waiting 30 minutes after consuming something acidic before taking out your toothbrush,” as it may weaken the tooth’s enamel otherwise. Later in the evening, the article advises patients brush their teeth again, adding that doing so a little earlier can help curb late-night snacking.

WHAT ABOUT THUMB SUCKING AND PACIFIERS? WILL THESE HABITS AFFECT MY CHILD’S TEETH?

Thumb sucking and pacifier use usually do not cause problems unless your child continues this habit for a long period of time.  Many children will naturally give up these habits on their own, however, if you notice that your child’s bite is changing (teeth are beginning to angle out or when the child bites down the teeth do not fit together) or your child is older than three years old, it is imperative that you intervene and help your child give up the pacifier or thumb.  In some cases, an orthodontist may recommend a mouth appliance to discourage thumb sucking behavior.
